                    BRYC TarHeels Mission

BRYC TarHeels AAU Basketball program is organized to provide boys and girls an

opportunity to continue skills development and to play at a higher competitive level. Our

program will promote player development by providing qualified and experienced

coaches. Our program will include but not limited to teaching: ball handling skills and

techniques with a focus on proficiently dribbling with both hands, passing and shooting skills,

the mental aspect and approach to playing basketball at this competitive level. We

want to develop players to allow them to “take it to the next level.”

                    What is BRYC TarHeels AAU?

The BRYC TarHeels AAU Basketball program will be starting its eighth season of

competitive play. The program began quietly in the spring of 2000, focusing on the

limited opportunities for BRYC AAU basketball. We were able to provide opportunities

for three boys programs.

In the spring of 2006 the BRYC Tarheels had 5 girls’ teams and 6 boys’ teams. Our 14U

Boys team qualified for the AAU National Tournament for the second year in a row.

The BRYC Tarheels will provide playing opportunities for boys and girls 10-17 years old.

The BRYC Tarheels are seeking qualified coaches for the 2009 Spring/Summer season.

                    Our Goals

To give players the best instruction possible through structured practices. This gives

them an opportunity to take what they learn in practice and implement it in games

without being afraid to fail.

If a player’s future goal is to play and be successful for his respective high school team, it

is our duty as coaches to help prepare them to achieve that goal by teaching them skills

and fundamentals needed.

In time, we don’t want to have to tell our players what to do every second of a game.

Instead, we want them to “understand” many aspects of the game they may face, along

with the different situations which may arise during the course of a game. We want them

to make their own decisions on the court, using coaches for help when necessary.

                    About AAU

AAU basketball is played in the spring with tryouts held in late February/early March and the

season starting in early March, ending around June or July. It is an opportunity for young

athletes who enjoy playing basketball to do so at a much higher competitive level than

the county or house league can offer. Players will compete on a BRYC team that will play

top teams in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, the region and national levels.

Games are played on the weekends and are held in a tournament style format with usually

3 or 4 games a weekend. Practices are held twice a week in gyms around the Burke,

Annandale/ Alexandria area. Team travel is based on your tournament schedule.

Some travel schedules may require an overnight stay. If your team qualifies to compete

in the national AAU or YBOA championships, your stay could be up to one week’s time.

                    Who is eligible?

                    How much does it cost?

The initial fee to participate in the BRYC Tarheels AAU Basketball program is

approximately $200.00. This fee will pay for the players AAU and YBOA membership

and regional qualifying tournaments. The fee will also cover the cost of uniforms. This

fee does not include season’s tournament fees. Typically teams will play on the weekend

in various tournaments. The tournament fee and Coaches expenses are divided between
